2017 Scholarship Recipients

Supporting our employees and their families in their learning and development and community and volunteer activities is a big part of our corporate culture. In fact, these are two of our Core Values.
Every year, we’re proud to award six new scholarships to our employees’ family members who demonstrate academic excellence while living two of our core values—we encourage personal learning and growth and engage in the well-being of our communities.
Community Leadership and Academic Scholarship Winners
Five students have each been awarded a $2,000 Community Leadership and Academic Scholarship for the 2017-18 academic year:

Alexandra Conistis
Alexandra Conistis is entering her second year at Dalhousie University and is working toward a Bachelor of Science with majors in Biochemistry and Microbiology.
Alexandra works hard in school and has achieved an average high enough to land her on the Dean’s List at Dalhousie. She has an interest in government and leadership as demonstrated in her involvement in Halifax West’s Student Government – World Involvement Ministry for two years. She is also volunteering for the Canadian Student Leadership Conference and the Nova Scotia Secondary School Student Association of Leadership during her time in high school. As well, during high school, she was a program assistant for Halifax Skating Club and a member of the Regional High School Champions, Halifax West Curling Team. Alexandra also has a keen interest for Dance and has been a volunteer with Romiosyni Greek Dance Organization for 7 years and a co-leader and member of BOBA Dance Group for 3 years. She has been a wonderful leader both in school and outside of school especially as a Program Assistant at the Halifax Skating Club.
Alexandra is the daughter of Tammy Conistis, Manager IT Applications at our Dartmouth office.
Brian Budd
Brian Budd is currently enrolled at Dalhousie University and is entering his third year of a Bachelor of Engineering Degree.
Brian has stayed involved in his community by participating in the Greater Moncton Dragon Boat Festival for 4 years, raising funds for the Lion’s Sick Children Fund, Sears National Kids Cancer Ride and Mado’s Gift Foundation. Throughout high school he kept very busy with various committees, participating in a Musical Production of “Beauty and the Beast”, being a member of the Basketball team, and a Captain of the Football team. With all of this he still found time to be a Lifeguard, Swimming Instructor and Life Saving Instructor at Pat Memorial Aquatic Centre. Since high school, Brian has continued to be involved in a wide variety of endeavours. He has served as Team Captain for the Big Horns Hockey Team at Dalhousie and been a member of Dalhousie University’s LeMarchant Residence Council. Recently, Brian was chosen to attend the 2017 Canadian Federation of Engineering Students Congress at the University of Western Ontario, which focuses on ‘The Entrepreneurial Engineer.” In May, he travelled to Honduras, where he participated in Dalhousie University’s Engineering Global Brigades, which worked at designing and creating sustainable water systems for local villages.
Brian is the son of Cindy Budd, Rehabilitation Consultant at our Moncton Main Street office.
Emily Green
Emily Green is currently enrolled at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton Campus and will be entering her third year of a Bachelor of Nursing degree in the fall.
Emily has shown great leadership skills by being a leader for Devon Park Baptist Church and Oromocto Baptist Church’s Youth groups for the past two years. Also, by being a Nursing Peer Mentor at UNB, she planned student events and workshops, and mentored first year students. She is a Judo Instructor at the Dragons Judo Club, where she teaches three classes a week to various groups from the age of 3 to 13 years. Emily has also done work in San Pedro, Dominican Republic, where she was both a translator and provided work aid throughout the construction of houses as well as in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she provided community aid in the Brazilian Favelas (slums) over a two month period.
Emily is the daughter of Michelle Green, Account Associate at our Fredericton office.
Mark Holt
Mark Holt is graduating from Riverview High School and is pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Science at University of New Brunswick.
Mark works hard in school and has an innate ability for Sciences, Computer Science and Mathematics. He keeps busy outside of academics by working at the YMCA as a Life Guard and Swimming Instructor, where he inspires and motivates his students to succeed. He has also been a member of his high school soccer team in which he has received the most sportsmanship award many times over his 13 years of playing. He has also played hockey with the Riverview Hockey Association.
Mark is the son of Andrew Holt, Director Application Development and Mary Holt Senior Programmer, at our Moncton Main Street office.
Sarah Armstrong
Sarah Armstrong is currently enrolled at the University of New Brunswick and is entering her third year of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology. Once she has completed her Bachelor of Science she plans to pursue a Medical Degree.
Sarah has given back to her community through a variety of volunteer experiences. This includes her experience at the Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre at Acadia University, where she was able to make positive changes in the lives of individuals who had suffered a cardiovascular event by helping them exercise and regain strength, confidence and independence. She also volunteered in the emergency room at the Moncton Hospital, working to help make visitors feel at ease during their visit by bringing them to the rooms of their loved ones. Currently, Sarah is Peer Mentor for the faculty of Kinesiology, a Biology Laboratory Assistant and has been selected by the faculty of Kinesiology to assist in the planning of the Faculty Orientation for the upcoming fall. On top of all of these roles, Sarah is also the captain of a Dragon Boat Festival Team.
Sarah is the daughter of Tracey Armstrong, Manager Contract and SAU at our Moncton Millennium office.
Leon R. Furlong Health Sciences Academic Scholarship
This scholarship was created to encourage continued academic excellence and the pursuit of higher education in the field of health sciences and is valued at $2,500. It is maintained for up to five consecutive academic years or until the recipient obtains their first undergraduate or graduate degree.
Hanna Grossman
Hanna Grossman is graduating from Riverview High School. In the fall she will be attending University, where she will begin study for a Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in Bio-Psychology and playing for the Seawolves varsity basketball team.
Hanna is an exceptional student and has maintained high 90’s in nearly all of her subjects throughout high school, maintaining honour roll status. She is described as being a “motivated, intelligent and a well-rounded individual,” a natural leader in the classroom and is involved in a variety of leadership roles outside the classroom. Hanna volunteers in the community with people of all ages and is a leader in the town’s children’s program. She has been a Camp Counsellor at Riverview Park and Recreation for 2 summers and is a volunteer coach with Riverview Minor Basketball Association.
Hanna is also involved with the Big Brother Big Sister program at her school, is head of the water station and cheering section for Legs for Literacy and also the captain of her basketball team at Riverview High. On top of all of this, Hanna also finds the time to tutor for a grade ten math class and one-on-one with students from other classes, as well as be a part of the 2017 Graduation Class Executive.
Hanna is the daughter of Paula Grossman, Senior Benefits Specialist at our Moncton Main Street office.
