Medavie announced today that, after more than two decades in a leadership role with the company, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pierre-Yves Julien plans to retire later this year. He will continue on as CEO in the coming months as the Board works to identify an appropriate replacement.
“It has been both my pleasure and privilege to lead this organization and our incredible team of dedicated employees for most of my career, but I am ready to begin the next chapter,” said Julien. “The timing feels right for me personally and for the company. The role has provided me a unique ability to shape the direction and build a strong leadership team. Today, we are the country’s leading Blue Cross plan and the largest provider of Emergency Medical Services in Canada and largest ambulance operator in Massachusetts.”
“At the same time, the Medavie Health Foundation has committed more than $6 million dollars since late 2011 to support initiatives focused on mental health and type 2 diabetes,” Julien added. “With a growing capital base of more than $40 million, we are making strategic philanthropic investments to improve the health of Canadians. I believe Medavie is poised to build on the strength of our past for a great future.”
The Board has appointed a special committee to recruit Julien’s successor, beginning this month. The committee has engaged Mark Surrette, co-founder of Knightsbridge Robertson Surrette, to lead the executive search.
“Pierre-Yves has been instrumental in leveraging Medavie’s Atlantic Canadian roots to build a diverse and innovative health care organization with more than 6,000 employees across Canada and in Massachusetts,” said Michael Decter, Medavie Board Chair. “It has been my pleasure to work with him over the past several years and I believe that he has created both a legacy and a vision that will allow us to attract a strong pool of candidates to lead Medavie into the future.”
